ABSTRACT: Giovanni Battista Dagnino is known internationally for his pioneering work on coopetition strategy, a new research area that he contributed to set off already more than a decade ago, as well as for the study of temporary competitive advantage. Coopetition strategy, or the simultaneous existence of cooperation and competition between firms and organizations, represents a third strategic option (other than competition and cooperation) that accommodates both deliberate action and spontaneous strategic behavior. In an environment of temporary competitive advantage, you need to continuously reconfigure assets, people, and capabilities to move from one opportunity to the next as the advantage source shifts away. For its multidisciplinary prowess and mindset-shaping attitude, this kind of research bears the potential for providing fundamental contributions to a significant range of social sciences, from management to sociology, from geography to political science and international affairs, from economic history to psychology, from economics to law.
