ABSTRACT: "Zero power” devices, systems that can perform and communicate by using part of the energy that is freely available in the same environment where they are located, represent one of the current biggest challenge in the technical and industrial areas. It is mainly a problem of sense, transduce and accumulate energy. To tackle this goal significant scientific effort have been paid in these recent years to investigate on viable solutions capable for exploiting environmental energy. Among other sources, environmental vibrations are those with a higher energy content and therefore are very interesting to be explored. However, to make life less simple, usually vibrations come with random behavior, low amplitude and are distributed over a wide bandwidth at low frequencies. This talk will provide an overview of major problems and current solutions, moreover some research results where nonlinear dynamics have demonstrated to be beneficial will be discussed.
Finally some considerations on how “collaterals” happening during the research activity can end into “unexpected” and interesting findings prone for future development will be given.
